When it comes to safety, there’s no room to play with in toys

Take a glance through any number of Safety Gate reports and you’ll quickly find a common theme – toys are amongst the most commonly recalled item. What’s most alarming is the consistency in the statistics around toys. Of the 776 toys recalled in 2018 and for the first two months of 2019, 82% (642) originated from China. In fact, between 2011 and Feb 2019, 86% of all the 4,600 toys recalled across Europe originated from China.

Overheating batteries prompt hoverboard recalls

This week, an urgent alert was issued on the Safety Gate network for two makes of hoverboard, the balance-driven toys that became the must-have gadget of 2017. In both cases, the cause of the recall is the lack of a cut-off switch to prevent the battery over-charging. If left plugged in for too long, the battery could quickly overheat and catch fire – as could the plastic housing.

First ever product recalled over user data fears

This month [February 2019] saw the European Commission order the recall of a children’s smartwatch because of data protection concerns – the first recall of its kind, ever. This particular product was thought to pose a serious risk to children, leaving then open to being located and potentially attacked. As part of its recall procedure, the Commission instructed public authorities across Europe to recall the Enox Safe-Kid-One from all end users.
