It is hard to escape the latest food trends and one of the most prevalent in recent months – and indeed over the last few years – has been veganism. According to meal delivery service Just Eat, veganism will be the single biggest food trend of 2018.
We’ve already seen one high profile convert. Just last month, celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay announced that he was “going to give this vegan thing a try”.
But as more people consider a vegan diet, the latest recall figures may cause some alarm. According to our latest Recall Index – which covers the first three months of the year – there were more than 300 separate recalls of three vegan staple foods.
In total, there were 183 recalls and notifications of nuts, nut product and seeds, while there were also 121 recalls and notifications relating to fruits and vegetables. The main culprit? Bacterical contamination was responsible for just over 25 per cent of recalls, followed by aflatoxins at 20.6 per cent.
The figures, recorded on the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) will undoubtedly worry those who consume these products on a regular basis. However, while it may appear to be cause for alarm, it may be that these recalls are a sign of a system working properly. And of course, it is worth remembering that these products are not exclusive to a vegan diet.
The positive is that food products which pose some sort of danger to consumers are being flagged, which is a vital first step. But the most crucial element is to actually remove these items from our stores and shelves at home. That is why we encourage all food manufacturers to have a robust recall strategy in place, to ensure that if these issues do arise, they can be dealt with swiftly and efficiently.
